Now the cat is out of the bag about our upcoming Big One theme: “Commonplace” we thought we’d take a deeper dive into commonplacing!
A commonplace book is a personal collection of knowledge — a space where you gather and organise quotes, ideas, reflections, facts, and inspiration you encounter in your reading, thinking, or daily life.

What your Commonplace Book is…
- A curated library of interesting facts
- A place to store wisdom, insights, and curiosities
- A resource that you can reference at a later date
What your Commonplace Book isn’t…
- A journal (which is usually about your own life)
- A planner (which organises your time)
A commonplace book organises what you find meaningful or useful — from the outside world or from your own thoughts.

Historically
Commonplace books have been used since the Renaissance. Thinkers like Marcus Aurelius, John Locke, and Virginia Woolf all kept them. In an age before Google, this was how people collected knowledge, made sense of what they learned, and built their intellectual lives.
What Goes in a Commonplace Book?
You can include:
- Memorable quotes
- Book excerpts or summaries
- Philosophical thoughts and ideas
- Facts and figures
- Poetry or lyrics
- Recipes
- Lists of things to explore later
There are no rules — it’s your personal archive of meaning.

Why Keep One?
- To retain what you read
- To create a resource for the future
- To develop your own thinking
- To connect ideas across different topics
- To slow down and engage more deeply with what matters to you
In short, a commonplace book is a tool for lifelong learning — a place where your ideas, influences, and insights can live and grow.
