Important Update for our US Customers

We are hugely disappointed to announce that will be suspending shipping to the United States from midday on Friday 15th August.

What’s changed:

Previously, any low value international purchases (under $800) were exempt from tariffs.However, it was announced that the de minimis threshold of $800 would be removed from 29th August.

What are the tariffs?

This is where it gets messy… Tariffs are calculated based on “country of origin”.

Products, such as Washi tape, that are manufactured outside of the UK will incur different rates than products inside of the UK. There is also the possibility that for the first 6 months, USPS will be using a flat rate tariff of $80-200.

It is unclear if this is per item or per shipment.

We initially believed that the tariffs would work in the same was as imports to the EU, where customers would be contacted to make payment prior to the parcel being delivered.

Latest advice

Royal Mail have made an announcement to confirm that all tariffs will need to be calculated and collected by the sender, and paid prior to the parcel entering the United States.

Looking for a solution

We are currently looking for a solution to allow us to continue to sell to customers within the United States.

While Royal Mail (and other shipping providers) are saying they will have systems in place to take payment at the time of booking shipping, the information (and the additional fees that these services will include) has not yet been provided. At present there is a total lack of clarity around what the tariffs will actually be.

We also don’t have the infrastructure to calculate and collect tariffs from customers at the point of purchase, and we cannot afford to absorb these costs ourselves.

Without this information it is impossible for us to continue to ship to the US at this time, despite the fact that it makes over 10% of our total revenue.

Current orders

We will turn off US shipping at 12pm on Friday 15th Aug. Any shop orders placed prior to this point will be dispatched by Monday 18th Aug to allow them enough time to reach the US before 29th Aug.

If you are in the US and a subscriber to our “Big One” subscription, we are currently researching the best way to get these to you. It is likely that we won’t have an answer to this prior to 29th August, so we ask that you please bare with us.

We hope it’s not forever…

We really hope that one of two things will happen…

1) The situation becomes more clear after 29th August and we can find a work around.

or, ideally…

2) De minimis exemptions are restored.
