Step-by-Step: How to Create a Vision Board

3 November 2025

Once you’ve collected all your images and words, you’re ready to assemble your vision board! Whether you’re making it physically or digitally, this is where your ideas come to life visually.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to creating your vision board:

1. Choose Your Format

Decide between a physical or digital vision board.

Physical Vision Board:

  • Use a poster board, cork board, journal page, canvas, or even your wall.
  • Great if you like working with your hands and want something tactile.

Digital Vision Board:

  • Use tools like Canva, Pinterest, Google Slides, or PowerPoint.
  • Ideal if you want something clean, printable, or to use as your phone/computer wallpaper.

2. Organise Your Images & Words

Lay everything out before gluing or arranging digitally. This helps you:

  • Spot visual themes
  • Remove clutter or duplicates
  • Group images by categories (if desired), like:
    • Top: Career & Goals
    • Bottom: Travel & Relationships
    • Centre: Core values or affirmations

3. Design Your Layout

There’s no ‘right’ layout, but here are a few styles:

Grid Layout:

Organised, clean, great for left-brained thinkers

Freeform / Collage:

Creative, flowing & just place images where they feel right

Centre-Focused:

Place a main word, image, or intention in the centre and build around it

4. Include Words, Quotes, and Affirmations

Words add power and clarity. Include:

  • Specific goals (‘Run a 5K by March’)
  • Affirmations (‘I am confident and capable’)
  • Power words (‘Freedom’ ‘Love’ ‘Balance’)

Use magazine clippings, handwriting, or digital text depending on your board type.

5. Secure Everything in Place

  • Physical: Use glue sticks, tape, push pins, or Mod Podge
  • Digital: Save as an image file (JPEG/PNG) or printable PDF

6. Place It Where You’ll See It

The key to a vision board working is repetition. Put it somewhere visible:

  • Physical: Bedroom wall, closet door, office, fridge
  • Digital: Phone lock screen, desktop background, tablet wallpaper

Bonus Tips:

  • Set an intention as you finalise it: say aloud what it means to you
  • Don’t stress about perfection & it’s about how it makes you feel
  • Leave some space for growth, new ideas, or spontaneous inspiration
  • Revisit or update your vision board every 6-12 months
